Northern Minnesota, 1965. When fourteen year old Jolina wounds a legendary buck, she becomes determined to track it down despite the warnings of an angry sheriff and her troubled father, Sven, who refuses to set foot in the swamp where the deer disappeared. Driven by curiosity, Jolina uncovers a map leading to a mysterious place called Big Buck Island and ventures into the wilderness with her dog Smokey.
